Last year, a joint report entitled Breathless for Blue Jeans: Health Hazards in China’s denim factories[1] by SACOM, ITUC/GUF Hong Kong Liaison Office (IHLO), War on Want and Clean Clothes Campaign found workers lack the occupational health and safety protection and their working condition remain exploitative and the deadly sandblasting[2] was still common in the industry. SACOM and other groups launched a global campaign and urged the involved brands to respond and improve the working condition immediately.

[Statement] Apple still has miles to go despite the recent toxins ban

On 13 August 2014, Apple announced the ban on benzene and n-hexane in the final assembly facilities of its iPhone and iPad products, a response to SACOM and other labour concern groups’ long-term campaign for a better working condition in Apple supply chain. Regrettably, it is a too-late commitment and there are still miles to achieve a healthy and safe environment to all workers in the Apple supply chain, when the ban is only effective in final assembly factories.

In Apple’s announcement, it claimed that investigations were conducted in 22 final assembly factories for the use of benzene and n-hexane. The investigative reports are undisclosed and Apple does not reveal the consequence of suppliers that failed to meet [...]

SACOM strongly condemns the explosion in Kunshan Zhongrong Metal Products Co Ltd. (hereinafter Zhongrong) on 2 August 2014.  As at 4 August 2014, the incident caused at least 75 dead and injured more than 180 workers.  Many injured victims have burn over 75% to 95% of the total body surface and at least 11 workers are still in critical condition. According to the media, we learnt that the explosion was caused by the burning of inflammable metallic dust.

Zhongrong is under the supply chain of CITIC Discastal, which produces wheel rim for automobile companies such as General Motors, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Mazda, Honda. SACOM demands the involved companies to take up their [...]
